Xiaomi is een Chinees bedrijf dat bekend staat om zijn rijstkokers, robotstofzuigers, luchtreinigers en smartphones. Nu heeft het voor elkaar gekregen wat Apple, zijn al lange tijd rivaal, niet kon: een elektrische auto maken en op de markt brengen.
En dat deed het in drie jaar tijd.
Om tijd en kosten te besparen, heeft het bedrijf praktijken overgenomen van Tesla en andere autofabrikanten, gebruik gemaakt van zijn eigen productontwikkelingskennis en aangesloten op de snel bewegende auto-toeleveringsketen van China. Jaren van het verfijnen van laptops, blenders en huisdiercamera's hebben geholpen bij het ontwikkelen van functies die zijn afgestemd op een wispelturige consumentenbasis, waaronder een afneembaar paneel met fysieke knoppen dat magnetisch vastklikt onder het 16,1-inch centrale scherm voor degenen die liever hun volume of stoel niet via het aanraakscherm bedienen.
Xiaomi heeft ongeveer 6.000 mensen aangetrokken om aan het autoproject te werken, zei Lei. Sommigen werden gerekruteerd van buitenlandse autofabrikanten zoals Porsche en BMW; anderen werden overgeplaatst vanuit andere afdelingen, zei Ma Yingbo, een lid van het marketingteam van Xiaomi. Onder de auto's waar Xiaomi naar keek voor inspiratie was Tesla's Model 3.
Om de ontwikkeling te vereenvoudigen en de kosten te verlagen, heeft Xiaomi het proces van "gigacasting" van Tesla overgenomen, dat gebruik maakt van grootschalig, hoogdruk aluminium spuitgieten om het frame van de auto te creëren. Het proces combineert honderden productiestappen in één, wat bespaart op onderdelen, gewicht, kosten en tijd.
